Last weekend was not the first time I deleted the Facebook and Instagram apps from my iPhone in the past two years. But it was the first time I deleted them both at the same time, and noticed a big shift in consciousness. Two years ago I purchased an iPhone and my life has changed in both positive and negative ways.
It was the day before I headed south to Arivaca for a day-long meditation retreat. I scanned my journal, and my thoughts, only to notice how much of a distraction social media had become for me. My higher Self was ok with social media because it was just another part of the present moment, but it was my thoughts and feelings that couldn’t handle the constant checking, status update overload, professional comparisons, etc.. SO, I hit DELETE, and suddenly felt a sense of freedom, delight, and less negative thinking. After a full day of freedom, I committed myself to 30 days free of social media to get a true sense of life without them. When I’ve taken a break from them in the past, I was barely able to last a couple of days. Or I deleted one, and overloaded on the other.
Its amazing to feel more connected to myself and my surroundings. I’m not obsessing over pictures someone else posted, or comparing myself to colleagues. I’m not thinking about updating my status or “checking in” before or after yoga or time spent at my office. I’m not obsessing over how many “likes” my facebook business page has received, or feedback people give me on the posts I put up 15 minutes ago. My life is a little bit calmer, quieter, and happier.
SO FAR, I’ve noticed I’m more connected to my present experience, I’m not distracting from physical feelings or emotional feelings– I am allowing myself to feel, and be present as my emotions shift. I’m more interested in the people in my “real” life than the virtual reality in my mind. I’m happier, experiencing less negative self-talk, and I’m more fun to be around (as witnessed by my boyfriend)!
JUST CURIOUS, Which social media apps do you use on a regular basis? Have you seen a difference in your mood after you log on to FaceBook or Instagram, or any other social media applications? Do you cyber stalk people, or compare yourselves to others when you’re on FB or IG? Have you noticed a difference in your relationships? Have you noticed a difference in the types of things you’re interested in spending your time doing? Have you noticed you take more or less photos for the sole purpose of hanging them on your wall or putting them in a photo album?
I’d love to hear your thoughts! I’ll keep you updated after I finish my Social Media Fast.
